HUDSON BAY COMPANY IGNORES PROHIBITION IN MANITOBA
From The Western Brewer 1916
The great Hudson Bay Co., of Winnipeg, which was doing business over 100 years ago, has refused to stop the sale of liquor in Manitoba under the new prohibition law that recently went into effect there.
The Hudson Bay Co., originally held a charter that gave it the right of exclusive trade through all the north-west, given by the British king. In 1870 the Hudson Bay Co. signed a deed of surrender with the government of Manitoba, and the company now claims the privilege of “trade without interference” that was part of the agreement in that deed, now gives it the right to continue the sale of liquor.
The Manitoba government has accepted the challenge, ordered the liquor placed on sale by the Hudson Bay Co. confiscated, and will take the matter into the courts. It will prove an interesting contest.
